Kundli Matching (Guna Milan)
Ashtakoot compatibility score out of 36 for two people
Updated
Kundli matching, or guna milan, compares two birth Moons to judge marital compatibility. The traditional ashtakoot system awards up to 36 points across eight kootas. Enter both people's details to see the score, the eight-row table and any Nadi, Bhakoot or Mangal dosha notes.
Private by design: everything is calculated in your browser. Your birth details are not uploaded, stored or tracked. The only link out is the optional button below the result, which opens the Navagraha app with your details in its address, and only if you click it.
The eight kootas
Varna (1 point) is spiritual and ego compatibility; Vashya (2) is mutual influence; Tara (3) compares the nakshatras for health and well-being; Yoni (4) is physical and instinctive harmony; Graha Maitri (5) is the friendship of the two Moon-sign lords, a proxy for mental wavelength; Gana (6) is temperament; Bhakoot (7) is the emotional bond and family welfare; and Nadi (8) is health and genetic compatibility. They add up to 36.
Varna, Tara and Gana are directional, so the order of the two people matters: the first is treated as the groom (boy) and the second as the bride (girl), following the classical tables.
How to read the score
By tradition 18 out of 36 is the minimum for a match to be considered, 24 or more is a very good match, and 32 or more is exceptional. These are guidelines, not a ruling: a high score with poor chart compatibility, or a lower score with strong chart support, are both possible, which is why astrologers also look at the full charts, dashas and Mangal dosha.
Nadi dosha arises when both people share the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya) and scores zero on the heaviest koota; Bhakoot dosha arises when the Moon signs are in a 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 relationship. The result flags both in plain language. Many authorities list exceptions to these doshas; like the Navagraha app, this calculator reports the raw score and does not apply them, so a qualified astrologer should judge them case by case.
Birth times and Mangal dosha
Only the Moon is needed for the 36-point score, so a missing birth time matters only when the Moon changes nakshatra or sign that day; the tool tells you when that is so. Comparing Mangal dosha needs a Lagna, so it is checked only when both birth times and places are given.
Accuracy and method
Every figure on this page is calculated in your browser with the same shared astrology library that powers the Navagraha app. Planet positions come from the astronomy-engine library (arc-second class accuracy for the Sun and Moon) and are shifted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard used by the Government of India and by the Swiss Ephemeris. In practice this agrees with Swiss Ephemeris results for signs, nakshatras and padas, apart from the rare case where a planet sits within a few arc-seconds of a boundary.
Rahu and Ketu use the true node, as in the app; many printed almanacs use the mean node, which can differ by up to about 1.7 degrees. Houses are whole-sign. Vimshottari dasha years are 365.25 days long. If you compare with another site and see a small difference, the node type, the ayanamsa or the birth-time rounding is almost always the reason.

Frequently asked questions
How is the guna milan score calculated?
Each person's birth Moon gives a nakshatra and a rashi. Eight kootas compare these using fixed classical tables, and their points add up to a maximum of 36.
What is a good score?
Traditionally 18 or more is acceptable and 24 or more is very good. The score is one input, not a decision by itself.
What if there is Nadi dosha?
It means both Moons share the same Nadi and Nadi koota scores zero. Texts mention exceptions and remedies, so ask a qualified astrologer rather than deciding from the score alone.
Does it need the birth time?
Not strictly: the Moon moves slowly enough that the date is often enough. The tool warns you when the Moon changes sign or nakshatra that day.
