Free Kundli Online

Your Vedic birth chart from date, time and place of birth

Updated

A kundli (janam kundli, or birth chart) is a map of the sky at the moment you were born, seen from the place you were born. Enter your details and this free calculator shows your Lagna (ascendant), where each of the nine grahas sits by sign, degree, nakshatra and house, a North-Indian style chart, and the dasha period you are running today.

Private by design: everything is calculated in your browser. Your birth details are not uploaded, stored or tracked. The only link out is the optional button below the result, which opens the Navagraha app with your details in its address, and only if you click it.

How your kundli is calculated

First the exact moment of birth is fixed in universal time using your place's time zone, including any historical daylight-saving or wartime offsets. Then the positions of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn are worked out and shifted from the tropical to the sidereal zodiac by the Lahiri ayanamsa, about 24 degrees at present. Rahu and Ketu, the Moon's nodes, are always opposite each other and always move backwards.

The Lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth, found from the local sidereal time and your latitude. It changes roughly every two hours, which is why the birth time matters. Houses are whole-sign: the Lagna sign is the first house, the next sign the second, and so on around the twelve signs.

How to read the result

The summary shows your Lagna, Moon sign (rashi) and birth nakshatra, the three most quoted facts in Vedic astrology. The planet table lists each graha's sign and degree, its nakshatra and pada (quarter), the house it occupies and whether it is moving forwards or retrograde. In the North-Indian chart the top diamond is always the first house and houses run anticlockwise; the small number in each house is the sign number, from 1 for Aries to 12 for Pisces.

The running dasha comes from the Vimshottari system, which divides a 120-year cycle among the nine planets according to your Moon's nakshatra. The planet whose period is running colours the themes of that stretch of life; the sub-period (antardasha) refines it.

If you do not know your birth time

Tick "I don't know the birth time" and the calculator builds a Chandra Lagna chart instead, counting houses from your Moon sign with planets placed for noon. It is a recognised fallback, but it cannot give a true Lagna, and the Moon itself can sit in a different sign or nakshatra if you were born at another hour that day. A parent, a hospital record or a birth certificate is the best source for the time.

Accuracy and method

Every figure on this page is calculated in your browser with the same shared astrology library that powers the Navagraha app. Planet positions come from the astronomy-engine library (arc-second class accuracy for the Sun and Moon) and are shifted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard used by the Government of India and by the Swiss Ephemeris. In practice this agrees with Swiss Ephemeris results for signs, nakshatras and padas, apart from the rare case where a planet sits within a few arc-seconds of a boundary.

Rahu and Ketu use the true node, as in the app; many printed almanacs use the mean node, which can differ by up to about 1.7 degrees. Houses are whole-sign. Vimshottari dasha years are 365.25 days long. If you compare with another site and see a small difference, the node type, the ayanamsa or the birth-time rounding is almost always the reason.

Frequently asked questions

Is this kundli calculator really free?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs entirely in your browser. The optional button after the result opens the Navagraha app if you want a deeper reading.

Why is my Lagna different on another website?

A different time zone, a rounded birth time, or a different ayanamsa are the usual causes. This tool uses the Lahiri ayanamsa and the exact local time of birth. A few minutes can change the degree of the Lagna, and a few hours will change the sign.

Does it use the Lahiri ayanamsa?

Yes. Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) is the most widely used ayanamsa in India and is the one the Navagraha app uses.

Is my birth data stored?

No. The calculation happens on your device and nothing you type is sent to a server by this page.
