Mangal dosha, also called Manglik or Kuja dosha, is said to arise when Mars occupies certain houses of the birth chart. It is one of the most-asked questions before an Indian marriage. This calculator finds your Lagna and Mars, checks the houses, and applies the common cancellations.

How the check works

The rule looks at the house Mars occupies counted from the Lagna (and, as a secondary check, from the Moon). Houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 and 12 are the dosha houses. The check is made from the Lagna first; if Mars is not there it looks from the Moon. This is the same rule the Navagraha app uses for its Kundli screen.

A dosha is treated as cancelled when Mars is in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn), when Jupiter joins or aspects Mars, or when the house and sign combination is one of the classical exceptions. When this happens the result says so plainly, because most traditions consider the dosha cancelled in such cases.

How to read the result

You will see Mars' sign and degree, its house from the Lagna and from the Moon, any cancellation found and a verdict: indicated, indicated but cancelled, or not indicated. When present it is graded mild or moderate, with the seventh and eighth houses weighed most heavily.

In practice, Mangal dosha is understood as a tendency toward intensity, impatience or friction in partnership, usually softened by maturity, by a partner with a matching dosha, and by remedies such as Hanuman or Kartikeya worship. It is not a prediction of an unhappy marriage, and astrologers disagree about its strength.

Traditions differ

Some schools also count from Venus, some ignore the second house, and cancellation lists vary between texts. A Lagna check needs your birth time; if you tick "I don't know the birth time", only the Moon-based check is possible. Accuracy and method

Every figure on this page is calculated in your browser with the same shared astrology library that powers the Navagraha app. Planet positions come from the astronomy-engine library (arc-second class accuracy for the Sun and Moon) and are shifted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard used by the Government of India and by the Swiss Ephemeris. In practice this agrees with Swiss Ephemeris results for signs, nakshatras and padas, apart from the rare case where a planet sits within a few arc-seconds of a boundary.

Rahu and Ketu use the true node, as in the app; many printed almanacs use the mean node, which can differ by up to about 1.7 degrees. Houses are whole-sign. Vimshottari dasha years are 365.25 days long. If you compare with another site and see a small difference, the node type, the ayanamsa or the birth-time rounding is almost always the reason.
