The 27 Nakshatras
Names, lords, deities and symbols of the lunar mansions
Updated
The 27 nakshatras of Vedic astrology, in zodiac order from 0° Aries, are Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika, Rohini, Mrigashira, Ardra, Punarvasu, Pushya, Ashlesha, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha, Moola, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati. Each one spans 13°20′ of the sidereal zodiac and is the “lunar mansion” the Moon occupies for about a day. The one holding the Moon at your birth is your janma nakshatra, often called your birth star. If you are new to the idea, start with what a nakshatra is.
Nakshatra lords follow a fixed, repeating nine-planet pattern: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. Ashwini, Bharani and Krittika begin the sequence, and the order repeats three times through the 27. So Ketu rules Ashwini, Magha and Moola; Venus rules Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha; the Sun rules Krittika, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha; and so on. The lord of your birth nakshatra is the starting planet of your Vimshottari dasha.
The table below lists every nakshatra with its ruling planet, presiding deity, symbol, degree range and the zodiac sign it falls in. Each nakshatra also has four padas of 3°20′ that correspond to the Navamsa, and the nakshatras of two people are compared in Kundli matching. Select any name to read about its character, or see the 12 rashis for how they fit into the signs.

How do I find my nakshatra?
Your nakshatra is the lunar mansion the Moon occupied at your birth, based on its sidereal longitude. Enter your date, time and place of birth in Navagraha to get your nakshatra, pada and lord instantly and free. Accurate birth time matters, since the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day.
How wide is each nakshatra?
Each nakshatra spans 13°20′ of the zodiac, and is divided into four padas of 3°20′. Since a sign is 30 degrees, every sign contains two and a quarter nakshatras, which is why some nakshatras are split across two signs. There are 108 padas in total, matching the 108 navamsas.
What is the difference between a nakshatra and a rashi?
A rashi is a 30-degree zodiac sign, and there are 12. A nakshatra is a 13°20′ lunar mansion, and there are 27. Nakshatras offer finer detail and determine your starting Vimshottari dasha. Astrologers use both together for a complete picture of the Moon.
