Magha is the 10th of the 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions) in Vedic astrology, spanning 120° to 133.333° sidereal in Simha (Leo). It is ruled by Ketu, presided over by the deity Pitris / Ancestors, and its symbol is the royal throne.

Magha mythology and symbolism

Magha means "the mighty" or "the bountiful", and it opens the sign of Leo with the star Regulus, the "little king" that has been regarded as a royal star in many cultures. Its deities are the Pitris, the revered ancestors who dwell in Pitriloka and who, in Indian belief, remain connected with their descendants through remembrance and ritual offerings. The symbol is a royal throne, a seat of authority that is inherited rather than seized.

This is the nakshatra of lineage. The Pitris are the line of fathers and mothers that stretches behind every person, and Magha asks what a person does with that inheritance: name, wealth, talent, responsibility. The month named after it, Magha (January-February), is a time of ritual bathing and ancestor remembrance in many parts of India. Ketu, the planet of past-life memory, rules the nakshatra, adding a sense of old authority carried into the present.
