Ashwini is the 1st of the 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions) in Vedic astrology, spanning 0° to 13.333° sidereal in Mesha (Aries). It is ruled by Ketu, presided over by the deity Ashwini Kumaras, and its symbol is the horse head.

Ashwini mythology and symbolism

Ashwini takes its name from the Ashwini Kumaras (also called the Ashvins, Nasatya and Dasra), the twin physicians of the gods. The Vedic hymns picture them as young horsemen racing across the sky in a golden chariot at dawn, arriving just before the Sun to chase the night away. Later tradition makes them the sons of the Sun god and a mare, which is why the nakshatra is symbolised by a horse's head and why its name is linked with the Sanskrit word for horse.

The twins are remembered above all as healers and rescuers: they are said to have restored youth to the aged sage Chyavana, to have lifted a sailor from the sea, and to have given the gods their own medicine. That is the heart of this star group. Ashwini sits at the very start of the zodiac, where the Moon begins its monthly circuit, so it carries the energy of beginnings, speed and first aid: the instinct to act at once when something needs mending.
