Moon Sign (Rashi) Calculator

Your Vedic Moon sign from date, time and place of birth

Updated

In Vedic astrology your rashi is your Moon sign, the sign the Moon occupied at your birth, not your Sun sign. It is the sign used for daily horoscopes, name selection, Sade Sati and marriage matching in India. This calculator finds it from your date of birth.

Private by design: everything is calculated in your browser. Your birth details are not uploaded, stored or tracked. The only link out is the optional button below the result, which opens the Navagraha app with your details in its address, and only if you click it.

Rashi versus Western Sun sign

Western astrology names you by the Sun's sign in the tropical zodiac. Vedic astrology names you by the Moon's sign in the sidereal zodiac. Two differences stack up: the Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days, and the sidereal zodiac is currently about 24 degrees behind the tropical one, so even your Sun sign is usually the previous sign to the one you know. The result also shows your sidereal Sun sign for comparison.

How it is calculated

The tool computes the Moon's apparent longitude at your birth moment, subtracts the Lahiri ayanamsa to get the sidereal longitude, and divides the circle into twelve signs of 30 degrees each. The sign's lord, element and your Moon's nakshatra and pada come straight from that longitude.

Sign-change days and unknown birth times

The Moon spends only about 54 hours in each sign, so on roughly one day in every 2 or 3 it changes sign. On such a day the date alone cannot tell you your rashi. If you do not know your birth time, tick the box: the calculator scans the whole day, and if the Moon changes sign it shows both signs together with the local clock times at which each applies. Check a birth certificate or ask a family member to settle it.

Birthplace matters little for the Moon sign, but it fixes the time zone, which matters a great deal for the date a birth time falls on in universal time. If you leave the place empty, Indian Standard Time is assumed.

Accuracy and method

Every figure on this page is calculated in your browser with the same shared astrology library that powers the Navagraha app. Planet positions come from the astronomy-engine library (arc-second class accuracy for the Sun and Moon) and are shifted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard used by the Government of India and by the Swiss Ephemeris. In practice this agrees with Swiss Ephemeris results for signs, nakshatras and padas, apart from the rare case where a planet sits within a few arc-seconds of a boundary.

Rahu and Ketu use the true node, as in the app; many printed almanacs use the mean node, which can differ by up to about 1.7 degrees. Houses are whole-sign. Vimshottari dasha years are 365.25 days long. If you compare with another site and see a small difference, the node type, the ayanamsa or the birth-time rounding is almost always the reason.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my rashi by date of birth?

Enter your date, time and place of birth. The calculator finds the Moon's sidereal position and tells you which of the 12 signs it was in.

Why is my Vedic Moon sign different from my zodiac sign?

Your usual zodiac sign is your Western tropical Sun sign. The Vedic rashi uses the Moon and the sidereal zodiac, so it can be a different sign altogether.

What if the Moon changed sign on my birthday?

Then the exact time of birth decides. Without it, this tool shows both signs and the times at which each applies.

Which ayanamsa is used?

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the standard in India and in the Navagraha app.
