Sade Sati Calculator
Check Saturn's 7½-year transit over your Moon sign
Updated
Sade Sati is the period in which Saturn passes through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign, and the sign after it. Because Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, the whole transit lasts roughly seven and a half years. Enter your birth details and this calculator tells you where you stand today.
Private by design: everything is calculated in your browser. Your birth details are not uploaded, stored or tracked. The only link out is the optional button below the result, which opens the Navagraha app with your details in its address, and only if you click it.
How the calculation works
First your Moon sign is found from the Moon's sidereal position at birth. Then Saturn's real sign changes are computed for decades either side of today, including its retrograde steps back into a previous sign. Sade Sati begins when Saturn first enters the 12th sign from your Moon (rising phase), continues through your Moon sign (peak phase), and ends when Saturn leaves the 2nd sign from it (setting phase). Short retrograde dips under a year are folded into one window, which is how the Navagraha app treats them.
Dhaiya (the small Panoti) is the shorter two-and-a-half-year spell when Saturn is in the 4th (Kantaka Shani) or 8th (Ashtama Shani) sign from the Moon.
How to read the result
You will see whether Sade Sati or Dhaiya is running now, the dates of the current or next Sade Sati, and the dates of each of its three phases. Dates are for Saturn's sign changes, so they apply to everyone with your Moon sign; the feel of the period depends on your wider chart, your dasha and Saturn's condition in your birth chart.
Tradition describes Sade Sati as a time of testing, patience and restructuring, and many people also report steady progress through disciplined work. It is a long transit to be understood, not a verdict to be feared.
Unknown birth time
Your Moon sign can only be uncertain if the Moon changed sign on your birth date. In that case, tick the unknown-time box and the calculator shows the Sade Sati picture for both possible signs. Place is optional here and only sets the time zone.
Accuracy and method
Every figure on this page is calculated in your browser with the same shared astrology library that powers the Navagraha app. Planet positions come from the astronomy-engine library (arc-second class accuracy for the Sun and Moon) and are shifted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard used by the Government of India and by the Swiss Ephemeris. In practice this agrees with Swiss Ephemeris results for signs, nakshatras and padas, apart from the rare case where a planet sits within a few arc-seconds of a boundary.
Rahu and Ketu use the true node, as in the app; many printed almanacs use the mean node, which can differ by up to about 1.7 degrees. Houses are whole-sign. Vimshottari dasha years are 365.25 days long. If you compare with another site and see a small difference, the node type, the ayanamsa or the birth-time rounding is almost always the reason.
