Ashlesha is the 9th of the 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions) in Vedic astrology, spanning 106.667° to 120° sidereal in Karka (Cancer). It is ruled by Mercury, presided over by the deity Nagas / Serpents, and its symbol is the coiled serpent.

Ashlesha means "the entwiner" or "the embrace", and its symbol is a coiled serpent. The deities are the Sarpas or Nagas, the serpent beings of Indian lore who guard treasure, rivers and the underworld. They are not simple villains: the Nagas hold great knowledge, the earth is said to rest on the serpent Shesha, and Vasuki served as the rope in the churning of the cosmic ocean. The coil also stands for the kundalini, the dormant life force that yogic texts picture as a serpent at the base of the spine.
