Jyeshtha is the 18th of the 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions) in Vedic astrology, spanning 226.667° to 240° sidereal in Vrishchika (Scorpio). It is ruled by Mercury, presided over by the deity Indra, and its symbol is the umbrella / earring.

Jyeshtha mythology and symbolism

Jyeshtha means "the eldest" or "the most excellent", and its deity is Indra, king of the gods. The identifying star is Antares, the red supergiant at the heart of Scorpio whose name means "rival of Mars" because of its similar colour. Indra is the thunder-wielder, the slayer of the dragon Vritra and the leader of the heavenly host. As the eldest, he holds responsibility for the whole assembly of gods and for the defence of order.

But the stories of Indra are not those of an untroubled ruler. He kills Vritra and then must wrestle with guilt and fear for his throne, retreats in hiding, and repeatedly worries that others will displace him. This is the heart of Jyeshtha: the weight of seniority, the loneliness at the top, and the protective instinct that comes with it. The umbrella or earring that symbolises the nakshatra speaks of rank and shelter, the royal canopy that both honours and burdens the holder.
