Chitra is the 14th of the 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions) in Vedic astrology, spanning 173.333° to 186.667° sidereal in Kanya (Virgo) and Tula (Libra). It is ruled by Mars, presided over by the deity Vishwakarma / Tvastar, and its symbol is the pearl / jewel.

Chitra mythology and symbolism

Chitra means "bright", "brilliant" or "variegated", and its identifying star is Spica, the radiant blue-white star of Virgo. The symbol is a pearl or a bright jewel, the thing that looks plain from outside but has been polished into brilliance. Its deity is Tvashtar, also known as Vishwakarma, the divine craftsman who fashioned the weapons and chariots of the gods and the very forms of living beings.

In the Vedas Tvashtar is the great artisan who shaped Indra's thunderbolt and gave beauty to all creatures. Vishwakarma, in later tradition, is the architect of the gods who built their cities. The nakshatra therefore stands for design: the idea that every created thing has a form that can be refined and made beautiful. Mars as ruler supplies the energy to carry out that design with skill and force, and the tiger yoni adds the elegance and power of a hunter in its prime.

Chitra nakshatra characteristics

People with the Moon in Chitra often have a distinctive style and a strong sense of presentation.
