Dhanishta is the 23rd of the 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions) in Vedic astrology, spanning 293.333° to 306.667° sidereal in Makara (Capricorn) and Kumbha (Aquarius). It is ruled by Mars, presided over by the deity Vasus, and its symbol is the drum / flute.

Dhanishta mythology and symbolism

Dhanishta is often interpreted as "the most wealthy" or "the richest" (from dhana, wealth), and in older texts it is also called Shravishtha, "the most famous". The presiding deities are the Vasus, the eight elemental gods of the Vedas who personify aspects of the natural world, among them earth, water, fire, wind, the Moon, the Sun and the sky. They are the dwellers and the bestowers, those who give a home and a share to every creature.

The symbol is a drum, and in some lists a flute, and the picture is one of rhythm and music that gathers a crowd. The Mahabharata mentions Bhishma as one of the Vasus born into the world by a curse, an image of great strength under restraint.
