How Shasha Yoga forms
Saturn in Capricorn or Aquarius (its own signs) or in Libra (its sign of exaltation) and in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the Lagna. It is one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas, named after the hare. Some modern authors also accept a kendra from the Moon. Saturn in Aries (debilitation) does not form it.
Effects of Shasha Yoga
Classical texts describe a person who rises to a position of authority, with command over many people, often through patient, long-term effort. Saturn's themes of discipline, duty, structure and service are given a strong platform, and these natives are often seen in administration, public service, engineering, land, industry or labour leadership. Their reputation tends to rest on reliability.
Saturn is also the planet of delay, solitude and austerity, so the result may come late and with hard work. The person may be reserved, cautious or serious in manner. In the 10th house the yoga is often considered especially productive for a long career; in the 1st it marks a disciplined personality; in the 4th it ties success to home and land after effort; in the 7th it can strengthen partnership but may bring seriousness or delay to it.
What strengthens it
- Saturn in Libra (exalted) is the strongest form; Capricorn and Aquarius (own) are also valid.
- Saturn free of close malefic conjunctions and well supported by Jupiter or Venus.
- Placement in the 10th house is classically seen as particularly productive.
- Not tightly joined to Mars, Rahu or Ketu, and not weakened by a damaging connection with the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th.
- Activation through the Saturn dasha and its sub-periods.
How common is Shasha Yoga?
Saturn has three dignified signs, and because it moves slowly it spends long periods in each. On simple counting it occurs in about one chart in twelve, with the figure varying by birth year.
Examples
Saturn in Libra in the 10th house (Capricorn Lagna), or Saturn in Capricorn in the 1st (Capricorn Lagna). Another is Saturn in Aquarius in the 7th for a Leo Lagna.
When Shasha Yoga gives results
Results typically unfold over the Saturn mahadasha and its antardashas, and in the transits of Saturn over the yoga's house or the Lagna.
A yoga is read together with the whole chart: the dignity of the planets, the houses they rule for your Lagna, and the dasha running. Houses here are whole-sign houses counted from the Lagna, as in the Navagraha app. Make your free Kundli to see where these planets sit in your own chart.
Frequently asked questions
What is Shasha Yoga?
It is a Pancha Mahapurusha yoga formed when Saturn is in Capricorn, Aquarius or Libra and in a kendra from the Lagna. Tradition associates it with authority, discipline, endurance and influence over groups.
Is Shasha Yoga good or bad?
It is considered favourable, since it gives Saturn dignity and a strong position. Its results often come slowly and through hard work, and the temperament may be serious. As always, the whole chart and the dashas decide how it shows.
Which careers suit Shasha Yoga?
Tradition links it with administration, public service, engineering, land, industry and leadership of workers or groups, but this is a tendency. Your actual career depends on the 10th house and its lord, and the dasha sequence.
