How Hamsa Yoga forms
Jupiter in Sagittarius or Pisces (its own signs) or in Cancer (its sign of exaltation) and in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the Lagna. It is one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas, named after the swan, a symbol of discrimination. Some modern authors also accept a kendra from the Moon. The condition is double: Jupiter must be dignified by sign and must stand in a kendra. Jupiter in Capricorn (debilitation) does not form it.
Effects of Hamsa Yoga
Classical texts describe a righteous, learned and respected person, often viewed as a figure of guidance in their family or community, with good fortune in matters of dharma, teaching and counsel. Jupiter's themes of wisdom, faith, children, teachers and expansion are supported, and the person is often drawn to learning, law, religion, advising or teaching. Physical descriptions in the texts, such as a distinguished appearance, are generally taken as symbolic of a dignified bearing.
The yoga does not remove the challenges that Jupiter can bring, such as over-optimism, weight, or a tendency to preach. In the 1st it shapes the personality; in the 4th it gives happiness through home, mother and education; in the 7th it supports a wise spouse and counselling roles; in the 10th it supports a respected profession built on knowledge.
What strengthens it
- Jupiter in Cancer (exalted) is considered the strongest form; Sagittarius and Pisces (own) are also strong.
- Jupiter free of combustion and not conjoined with Rahu or Saturn closely.
- Support from the Moon and a well-placed Lagna lord.
- A placement in the 1st, 4th or 10th is often regarded as especially favourable.
- Activation through the Jupiter dasha and its sub-periods.
How common is Hamsa Yoga?
Like Ruchaka, Malavya and Shasha, Hamsa has three dignified signs, so on simple counting it occurs in about one chart in twelve. It is not an exceptional rarity.
Examples
Jupiter in Cancer in the 1st house (Cancer Lagna), or Jupiter in Sagittarius in the 10th house (Pisces Lagna). Another is Jupiter in Pisces in the 4th house for a Sagittarius Lagna.
When Hamsa Yoga gives results
Results typically appear in the Jupiter mahadasha and in antardashas of Jupiter, and again when Jupiter transits the yoga's house or the Lagna.
A yoga is read together with the whole chart: the dignity of the planets, the houses they rule for your Lagna, and the dasha running. Houses here are whole-sign houses counted from the Lagna, as in the Navagraha app. Make your free Kundli to see where these planets sit in your own chart.
Frequently asked questions
What is Hamsa Yoga?
It is a Pancha Mahapurusha yoga formed when Jupiter is in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer and in a kendra from the Lagna. Tradition associates it with wisdom, ethical conduct, a respected standing and a generous, guiding nature.
What does Hamsa Yoga mean?
Hamsa means swan, a classical symbol of discrimination and purity. The yoga is named for the dignity and wisdom that Jupiter bestows when it is strong and well placed in a kendra, although how this appears depends on the whole chart.
Does Hamsa Yoga make someone rich?
Tradition links it more with respect, knowledge and good fortune than with wealth alone. Money depends on the 2nd, 11th and 5th and 9th houses and on the dashas. Treat the yoga as supportive, not as a promise of riches.
