Parivartana Yoga
Classical yoga
Updated
Parivartana Yoga is an exchange of signs between two planets, which binds their two houses together. Tradition grades it as Maha (between good houses), Khala (involving the 3rd) or Dainya (involving the 6th, 8th or 12th).

How Parivartana Yoga forms
Two planets each placed in a sign owned by the other, an exchange of signs (also called mutual reception). For example, Mars in Taurus and Venus in Aries. Rahu and Ketu own no sign in the classical scheme, so they are left out. Classical texts sort the exchanges into three kinds by the houses involved. Maha Parivartana is an exchange between the lords of any two of the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 11th houses, which gives 28 combinations. Khala Parivartana involves the 3rd lord with one of those houses, 8 combinations. Dainya Parivartana involves the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th house, 30 combinations. That makes 66 possible house pairings in all.
Effects of Parivartana Yoga
Each planet in an exchange is said to behave almost as if it were in its own sign, and the two houses it connects begin to work as a pair. A Maha Parivartana between strong lords is read like a Raja Yoga: the affairs of both houses support each other, and an exchange between the 9th and 10th lords is itself a form of Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga. Khala Parivartana is linked with effort, changing fortunes and the need for courage, while Dainya Parivartana ties a good house to a difficult one and is linked with obstacles in those areas.
Exchanges are also flexible. A Dainya Parivartana between two dusthana lords, such as the 6th and 8th, can act like Viparita Raja Yoga and give success after trouble. The dignity of the two planets, their natural friendship and the dashas all shape the outcome, so the type of exchange is a starting point rather than a verdict.
What strengthens it
- A Maha Parivartana involving the Lagna lord, the 9th lord or the 10th lord.
- Both planets strong: not combust, not afflicted, and well supported by aspect.
- The two planets natural friends, so the exchange is cooperative.
- The exchange involving kendras and trikonas rather than dusthanas.
- Activation in the dashas of the two exchanging planets.
How common is Parivartana Yoga?
Some sign exchange appears in a sizeable minority of charts. A Maha Parivartana between two strong lords is less common and is the form astrologers usually highlight.
Examples
For a Leo Lagna, the Sun in Aries (the 9th house) and Mars in Leo (the 1st) exchange signs, linking the Lagna lord with the 9th lord in a Maha Parivartana. For a Sagittarius Lagna, the Sun in Cancer (the 8th) and the Moon in Leo (the 9th) link the 8th and 9th lords, a Dainya Parivartana.
When Parivartana Yoga gives results
Results show mainly in the dashas of the two exchanging planets, and especially when one runs as mahadasha and the other as antardasha.
A yoga is read together with the whole chart: the dignity of the planets, the houses they rule for your Lagna, and the dasha running. Houses here are whole-sign houses counted from the Lagna, as in the Navagraha app. Make your free Kundli to see where these planets sit in your own chart.
Frequently asked questions
What is Parivartana Yoga?
It is an exchange of signs between two planets, each sitting in a sign owned by the other. Tradition says it binds the two houses involved, so that their matters work together, for better or for worse depending on the houses.
What are Maha, Khala and Dainya Parivartana?
They are the three classical types. Maha is an exchange between lords of the good houses (1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11). Khala involves the 3rd lord. Dainya involves the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th house.
Is a sign exchange always good?
No. A Maha Parivartana between strong planets is considered very favourable, but an exchange involving a dusthana lord can bring difficulty to the other house, or in some cases a Viparita-style reversal. The houses and planets involved decide the result.
