How Amala Yoga forms
A natural benefic (Jupiter, Venus or Mercury) in the 10th house counted from the Lagna or from the Moon. Most teachers require the benefic to be free of affliction: not joined or closely aspected by malefics, and not debilitated or combust. Some add that the 10th house should hold no malefic at all. Mercury counts as a benefic here only when it is not joined with malefics. The name Amala means spotless, and refers to the person's reputation.
Effects of Amala Yoga
The 10th house shows action, career and public standing, so a benefic there is read as good deeds and a good name. Classical texts describe a person of spotless reputation, ethical in conduct and respected for their work, whose fame lasts. The benefic involved suggests the field: Jupiter points to teaching, law, advising, finance or religious work; Venus to the arts, design, hospitality or diplomacy; Mercury to commerce, writing, accounts or technology.
The yoga describes the quality of the reputation more than its size. A strong 10th lord and supportive dashas are needed for prominence, and an Amala formed by a weak or afflicted planet gives only a mild result. The version counted from the Lagna is usually given more weight than the one counted from the Moon.
What strengthens it
- The benefic in its own, exalted or friendly sign in the 10th.
- No malefic joining or closely aspecting the 10th house or the benefic.
- A strong 10th lord, well placed by house and sign.
- The yoga formed from the Lagna rather than only from the Moon.
- Activation in the dasha of the benefic in the 10th.
How common is Amala Yoga?
Fairly common on the bare rule, since three planets can form it from two reference points. A clean, unafflicted form from the Lagna is considerably less common.
Examples
For a Libra Lagna, Jupiter in Cancer in the 10th house, where it is exalted. For a Moon in Virgo, Venus in Gemini, which is the 10th from the Moon, forms the Moon-based version.
When Amala Yoga gives results
It is most visible in the dasha of the benefic in the 10th, and in periods when transits support the 10th house and its lord.
A yoga is read together with the whole chart: the dignity of the planets, the houses they rule for your Lagna, and the dasha running. Houses here are whole-sign houses counted from the Lagna, as in the Navagraha app. Make your free Kundli to see where these planets sit in your own chart.
Frequently asked questions
What is Amala Yoga?
It forms when Jupiter, Venus or Mercury is in the 10th house from the Lagna or the Moon, free of affliction. Tradition links it with a spotless reputation, ethical conduct and respect for one's work.
Does Amala Yoga guarantee fame?
No. It describes the quality of a reputation rather than its size. Prominence depends on the strength of the 10th house and its lord, on the dashas and on effort, so treat it as a supportive indication.
Is Amala Yoga from the Moon valid?
Most classical descriptions accept the 10th from either the Lagna or the Moon. Many astrologers give more weight to the Lagna-based form and treat the Moon-based one as a secondary indication.
