How Chandra-Mangala Yoga forms
The Moon (Chandra) and Mars (Mangala) together in the same sign. Many teachers also count the two in mutual aspect, which in practice means the Moon and Mars in opposite signs, since both aspect the 7th from themselves. Some extend it to Mars aspecting the Moon by its special 4th or 8th aspect, but that is a looser reading. A conjunction within a few degrees is considered stronger than a wide one.
Effects of Chandra-Mangala Yoga
Classical texts associate the yoga with earning through enterprise: the drive and nerve of Mars applied to the Moon's sense of what people want and need. It is often discussed in connection with business, trade, property, food, medicine and other work that needs both instinct and courage. Some old lists also mention unconventional or questionable trades among its results; modern astrologers usually read that as a willingness to take commercial risks rather than as a moral judgement.
Emotionally, the pairing is intense: protective, quick to react and determined, but also prone to impatience, mood-driven decisions and friction at home, particularly with the mother, when Mars is harsh. In Cancer the conjunction places Mars in its sign of debilitation, and in Scorpio it places the Moon in its debilitation; since in each case the planet's dispositor sits beside it, many teachers apply a cancellation of that debilitation, so these forms need careful reading.
What strengthens it
- A bright Moon and a Mars in its own or exalted sign (Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn).
- The pair in a kendra, trikona, the 2nd or the 11th house from the Lagna.
- Jupiter's aspect on the pair, which is said to refine its drive.
- No close involvement of Rahu, Ketu or Saturn.
- Activation in the Moon and Mars dashas and their antardashas.
How common is Chandra-Mangala Yoga?
The Moon joins Mars by sign in about one chart in twelve. Counting the mutual-aspect form as well, roughly one chart in six has some version of it.
Examples

When Chandra-Mangala Yoga gives results
The yoga is most active in the Moon mahadasha with Mars antardasha, the Mars mahadasha with Moon antardasha, and the main periods of either planet.
A yoga is read together with the whole chart: the dignity of the planets, the houses they rule for your Lagna, and the dasha running. Houses here are whole-sign houses counted from the Lagna, as in the Navagraha app. Make your free Kundli to see where these planets sit in your own chart.
