Updated

Sunapha Yoga forms when a planet other than the Sun and the nodes occupies the 2nd house from the Moon. Tradition links it with self-earned resources, intelligence and a good name, coloured by the planet that forms it.

How Sunapha Yoga forms

One or more planets other than the Sun, Rahu and Ketu in the 2nd house counted from the Moon, while the 12th from the Moon has no such planet. If the 12th from the Moon is also occupied, the combination is called Durudhura instead; if only the 12th is occupied, it is Anapha. These three yogas, Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhura, describe the support the Moon receives from the planets on either side of it, and the texts give a distinct flavour for each of the five planets that can form them: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.

Effects of Sunapha Yoga

The 2nd from the Moon is read as what the mind gathers and builds up. Classical texts describe a person who earns through their own effort and intelligence, acquires property or a respected position, and is thoughtful and well regarded. The planet involved shapes the result: Mars is linked with courage and enterprise, Mercury with learning, speech and trade, Jupiter with knowledge, ethics and respect, Venus with comfort, family and the arts, and Saturn with patient effort, land and resources built through hard work.

The strength of the forming planet matters more than the label. A debilitated or afflicted planet, or one that rules difficult houses for the Lagna, gives a weaker or mixed result, and the yoga says nothing on its own about the scale of wealth. Many teachers read it mainly as a sign that the mind has resources and support to draw on.

What strengthens it

How common is Sunapha Yoga?

Common. A planet other than the Sun sits in the 2nd from the Moon, with the 12th from the Moon empty, in roughly one chart in four on simple counting. Its value lies in which planet forms it and how strong that planet is.

Examples

The Moon in Aries with Jupiter in Taurus, and no planet other than the Sun in Pisces, forms a Jupiter-type Sunapha. The Moon in Libra with Saturn in Scorpio and Virgo empty forms a Saturn-type Sunapha, read as resources built slowly through steady work.

When Sunapha Yoga gives results

Results usually show in the dasha of the planet in the 2nd from the Moon and in the Moon's own dasha. The house that the yoga occupies from the Lagna suggests which area of life it supports.

A yoga is read together with the whole chart: the dignity of the planets, the houses they rule for your Lagna, and the dasha running. Houses here are whole-sign houses counted from the Lagna, as in the Navagraha app. Make your free Kundli to see where these planets sit in your own chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is Sunapha Yoga?

It forms when a planet other than the Sun, Rahu or Ketu occupies the 2nd house from the Moon and the 12th from the Moon is empty. Tradition links it with self-earned resources, intelligence and reputation, coloured by the planet involved.

What is the difference between Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhura?

All three look at planets next to the Moon. Sunapha has a planet in the 2nd from the Moon, Anapha has one in the 12th from the Moon, and Durudhura has planets on both sides. If neither side is occupied, the condition is called Kemadruma.

Does the Sun count for Sunapha Yoga?

No. The classical rule leaves out the Sun, as well as Rahu and Ketu. Planets on either side of the Sun form a different set of yogas, called Vesi, Vasi and Ubhayachari.
