Anapha Yoga
Chandra yoga (read from the Moon)
Updated
Anapha Yoga forms when a planet other than the Sun and the nodes occupies the 12th house from the Moon. Tradition links it with good health, a pleasing manner, a good reputation and, later in life, an interest in letting go and inner growth.

How Anapha Yoga forms
One or more planets other than the Sun, Rahu and Ketu in the 12th house counted from the Moon, while the 2nd from the Moon has no such planet. It is the mirror image of Sunapha. If planets occupy both the 12th and the 2nd from the Moon, the combination is called Durudhura instead. As with Sunapha, the texts describe a slightly different result for each of the five planets that can form it.
Effects of Anapha Yoga
Classical texts describe a person with a healthy constitution, good manners and an agreeable presence, who is well spoken of and enjoys comforts. Because the 12th is a house of spending, release and the inner life, the yoga is also linked with generosity, spending on others and, in later years, a pull towards spiritual interests or detachment. The forming planet colours this: Mars brings leadership and assertiveness, Mercury skill with words and the arts, Jupiter virtue and learning, Venus charm and refinement, and Saturn endurance and quiet service.
A strong, well-placed planet in the 12th from the Moon gives the clearest result, while a debilitated or afflicted one can show the shadow side of the 12th, such as overspending or withdrawal. The yoga is supportive rather than decisive, and its effect depends on the dignity of the planet, the Moon's strength and the house it falls in from the Lagna.
What strengthens it
- The forming planet in its own, exalted or friendly sign, and not combust.
- A natural benefic such as Jupiter, Venus or Mercury forming it, which tradition reads as the gentler form.
- A bright, strong Moon.
- The 12th from the Moon not falling in a dusthana from the Lagna, or, if it does, the planet being strong there.
- Activation in the dasha of the forming planet or of the Moon.
How common is Anapha Yoga?
Common, at roughly the same rate as Sunapha: about one chart in four on simple counting has a planet other than the Sun in the 12th from the Moon with the 2nd from the Moon empty.
Examples
The Moon in Cancer with Venus in Gemini (the 12th from the Moon) and no planet other than the Sun in Leo forms a Venus-type Anapha. The Moon in Capricorn with Mercury in Sagittarius and Aquarius empty forms a Mercury-type Anapha.
When Anapha Yoga gives results
It is most active in the dasha of the planet in the 12th from the Moon and in the Moon's dasha. Its later-life themes of release and reflection are often described as coming forward with age.
A yoga is read together with the whole chart: the dignity of the planets, the houses they rule for your Lagna, and the dasha running. Houses here are whole-sign houses counted from the Lagna, as in the Navagraha app. Make your free Kundli to see where these planets sit in your own chart.
Frequently asked questions
What is Anapha Yoga?
It forms when a planet other than the Sun, Rahu or Ketu occupies the 12th house from the Moon and the 2nd from the Moon is empty. Tradition links it with good health, a pleasing manner, reputation and, later in life, spiritual interests.
Is Anapha Yoga good?
It is considered favourable, especially when the planet involved is strong and well placed. A weak or afflicted planet in the 12th from the Moon gives a milder or more mixed result, so the planet's dignity matters more than the name.
Which planet gives the best Anapha Yoga?
Tradition generally reads Jupiter, Venus and Mercury as the gentler forms and Mars or Saturn as results that come through effort. In practice the planet's sign, lordship for your Lagna and freedom from affliction matter more than which planet it is.
