Durudhura Yoga

Chandra yoga (read from the Moon)

Updated

Durudhura Yoga forms when planets other than the Sun and the nodes occupy both the 2nd and the 12th houses from the Moon. Tradition links it with comfort, resources and generosity, with the flavour set by the two planets involved.

How Durudhura Yoga forms

Planets other than the Sun, Rahu and Ketu in both the 2nd and the 12th houses counted from the Moon, so that the Moon is flanked on both sides. It combines the conditions of Sunapha and Anapha. Any of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn can take part, and the texts read the result from the pair of planets involved. Some teachers note that when both flanking planets are natural malefics, the Moon is also hemmed in (a form of Papa Kartari), which makes the result more mixed.

Effects of Durudhura Yoga

Classical texts describe a person who enjoys wealth, vehicles and comforts, is generous and charitable, and is supported by family, helpers and friends. The Moon, as the mind, has company on both sides, which tradition reads as security and a well-resourced life. The yoga is said to give the results of both Sunapha and Anapha together.

Which planets flank the Moon decides the tone. Jupiter and Venus on either side give the softest, most comfortable form; Mars and Saturn give a more effortful, strong-willed one, and some read that pairing as pressure on the mind rather than support. Weak, debilitated or combust planets reduce the effect.

What strengthens it

How common is Durudhura Yoga?

Roughly one chart in nine on simple counting has planets on both sides of the Moon. It is common enough that the planets involved matter more than its presence.

Examples

The Moon in Virgo with Venus in Libra (the 2nd from the Moon) and Mercury in Leo (the 12th) is a benefic Durudhura. The Moon in Sagittarius with Saturn in Capricorn and Mars in Scorpio is a Mars-Saturn form, read as effort and pressure as much as support.

When Durudhura Yoga gives results

Results tend to show in the dashas of the two flanking planets and of the Moon, and in their antardashas within each other's periods.

A yoga is read together with the whole chart: the dignity of the planets, the houses they rule for your Lagna, and the dasha running. Houses here are whole-sign houses counted from the Lagna, as in the Navagraha app. Make your free Kundli to see where these planets sit in your own chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is Durudhura Yoga?

It forms when planets other than the Sun, Rahu or Ketu occupy both the 2nd and 12th houses from the Moon. Tradition links it with comfort, resources, generosity and support from others.

Is Durudhura Yoga stronger than Sunapha or Anapha?

Tradition says it gives the results of both, so it is often seen as the fuller form. Its real strength still depends on which planets flank the Moon and how dignified they are.

What if malefics flank the Moon?

When both flanking planets are natural malefics such as Mars and Saturn, many teachers also count a Papa Kartari on the Moon, which can bring pressure on the mind. The result is then mixed rather than simply favourable.
