Kemadruma Yoga

Challenging yoga (dosha-type)

Updated

Kemadruma Yoga forms when no planet other than the Sun and the nodes occupies the 2nd or 12th house from the Moon. Tradition links an unsupported Moon with phases of insecurity or feeling alone, but most charts that meet the basic rule also meet a cancellation.

How Kemadruma Yoga forms

No planet in the 2nd or the 12th house counted from the Moon. The Sun, Rahu and Ketu are not counted, so only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn can prevent it. Classical texts also give ways in which it is cancelled (Kemadruma bhanga), and teachers use different sets of them. The commonly cited ones are: a planet other than the Sun and the nodes in a kendra from the Lagna or from the Moon; the Moon itself in a kendra from the Lagna; the Moon joined by another planet; and the Moon aspected by Jupiter. Some also accept a full, bright Moon. Because the cancellations are broad, a strict, uncancelled Kemadruma is far rarer than the basic rule suggests.

Effects of Kemadruma Yoga

The Moon represents the mind and emotional security, and the houses either side of it are read as its support. When both are empty, classical texts describe a Moon left on its own: phases of financial strain, feeling unsupported, restlessness of mind or distance from family. Older texts describe these results in stark terms; modern astrologers generally read them as a tendency to carry one's problems alone rather than as a fixed outcome.

In practice, the yoga is weighed together with its cancellations, the Moon's brightness and dignity, and the rest of the chart. Many people with a technical Kemadruma build stable, well-supported lives, and the self-reliance it implies can become a real strength. It is not a reason for alarm, and remedies sold through fear deserve caution.

What strengthens or softens it

How common is Kemadruma Yoga?

On the bare rule it is common, met in roughly a quarter to two-fifths of charts on simple counting (depending on whether a planet joining the Moon is counted), because only five planets can fill the two houses. Once the usual cancellations are applied, a strict, uncancelled form drops to a few percent of charts or fewer.

Examples

The Moon in Leo with no planet in Cancer or Virgo forms the basic yoga (the Sun in Virgo would not change this, since the Sun is not counted). If Jupiter is in Scorpio, the 4th from the Moon, a planet stands in a kendra from the Moon and most teachers treat the yoga as cancelled.

When Kemadruma Yoga gives results

Where it is not cancelled, its themes are said to appear in the Moon mahadasha and Moon antardashas, and during demanding transits over the natal Moon such as Sade Sati. A well-placed dasha lord elsewhere in the chart can largely offset it.

A yoga is read together with the whole chart: the dignity of the planets, the houses they rule for your Lagna, and the dasha running. Houses here are whole-sign houses counted from the Lagna, as in the Navagraha app. Make your free Kundli to see where these planets sit in your own chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is Kemadruma Yoga?

It is the condition in which no planet other than the Sun, Rahu or Ketu occupies the 2nd or 12th house from the Moon. Tradition reads it as a Moon without support, linked with phases of insecurity, though it is very often cancelled by other factors.

How is Kemadruma Yoga cancelled?

The commonly cited cancellations are a planet (other than the Sun and the nodes) in a kendra from the Lagna or Moon, the Moon in a kendra from the Lagna, the Moon joined by a planet, or the Moon aspected by Jupiter. Texts differ on the full list, so a careful chart reading is the way to check.

Does Kemadruma Yoga mean poverty?

No. Older texts used harsh language, but modern practice reads it as a tendency, and most charts that meet the basic rule are cancelled. Finances depend on the 2nd and 11th houses, the dashas and a person's own choices, and this is a traditional reading, not financial advice.
