Challenging yoga (dosha-type)

Shakata Yoga forms when the Moon is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house from Jupiter. Tradition links it with fortunes that rise and fall like a cart wheel, and it is commonly cancelled when the Moon is in a kendra from the Lagna.

How Shakata Yoga forms
The Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th house counted from Jupiter. Shakata means a cart, and the image is of a cart wheel whose spokes rise and fall in turn. The usual cancellation is the Moon in a kendra from the Lagna; some teachers also accept Jupiter in a kendra from the Lagna or a strong, bright Moon as cancelling it. Because the Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th from Jupiter means Jupiter is in the 8th, 6th or 2nd from the Moon, Jupiter is then never in a kendra from the Moon, so Shakata and Gaja Kesari cannot exist in the same chart.
Effects of Shakata Yoga
Classical texts describe a life of fluctuation: periods of gain followed by setbacks, effort that sometimes has to be repeated, and a degree of reliance on others. The Moon (the mind and daily life) and Jupiter (wisdom, support and good fortune) sit in a difficult relationship, so the protective help of Jupiter is said to reach the Moon less easily.
Modern readers generally treat the yoga as a pattern of cycles rather than misfortune, and note that it builds resilience. Its effect is reduced by the usual cancellations, by a strong Jupiter or Moon, and by good dashas. Uncancelled, it is read as a reason to plan for ups and downs rather than as a forecast of hardship.
What strengthens or softens it
- The Moon in a kendra from the Lagna, the most widely accepted cancellation.
- Jupiter in a kendra from the Lagna, or in its own or exalted sign, softens it.
- A bright, strong Moon also reduces it.
- A dim Moon and a weak Jupiter, both in dusthanas, is the form tradition takes most seriously.
- Its themes tend to surface in the Moon and Jupiter dashas.
How common is Shakata Yoga?
The Moon falls in the 6th, 8th or 12th from Jupiter in about one chart in four. After removing charts where the Moon is in a kendra from the Lagna, roughly one in six remain.
Examples
Jupiter in Aries with the Moon in Virgo (the 6th from Jupiter) forms the basic yoga; for a Gemini Lagna the Moon in Virgo is in the 4th house, a kendra, so most teachers treat it as cancelled. Jupiter in Leo with the Moon in Cancer (the 12th from Jupiter) for a Taurus Lagna places the Moon in the 3rd house, so the yoga stands.
When Shakata Yoga gives results
It is said to show in the Moon and Jupiter mahadashas and in their antardashas within each other's periods.
A yoga is read together with the whole chart: the dignity of the planets, the houses they rule for your Lagna, and the dasha running. Houses here are whole-sign houses counted from the Lagna, as in the Navagraha app. Make your free Kundli to see where these planets sit in your own chart.
Frequently asked questions
What is Shakata Yoga?
It forms when the Moon is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house from Jupiter. Tradition links it with fluctuating fortunes, like the turning wheel of a cart, and it is often cancelled when the Moon is in a kendra from the Lagna.
How is Shakata Yoga cancelled?
The most widely accepted cancellation is the Moon in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the Lagna. Some teachers also accept Jupiter in a kendra from the Lagna or a strong, bright Moon.
Can Shakata Yoga and Gaja Kesari Yoga both be present?
No. Gaja Kesari needs Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon, while Shakata places Jupiter in the 2nd, 6th or 8th from the Moon, so the two cannot occur together.
