How Guru Chandal Yoga forms

Jupiter (Guru) and Rahu together in the same sign. Some teachers extend it to Jupiter with Ketu, or to Rahu's aspect on Jupiter, though Rahu's aspects are themselves debated. A conjunction within a few degrees is considered stronger. The name uses an old, socially loaded term, and some modern astrologers prefer to call it the Guru-Rahu conjunction. It is a widely used later label rather than a named yoga in the best-known classical texts.

Effects of Guru Chandal Yoga

Jupiter represents wisdom, ethics, teachers and tradition, and Rahu amplifies, unsettles and looks for what is new or foreign. Together they are traditionally read as a mind that questions received wisdom. The cautions are about judgement: following unreliable teachers or advice, cutting ethical corners, overconfidence in one's own views, or friction with mentors and elders.

The same combination is often seen in innovators, reformers, researchers and people who bridge cultures or bring a tradition into new settings. When Jupiter is dignified and well placed, its wisdom is said to guide Rahu's ambition; when Jupiter is weak or combust, Rahu's restlessness dominates. Because both planets move slowly, the conjunction lasts several months and is shared by everyone born in that window, so its house and the dashas decide how personal it is.

What strengthens or softens it

How common is Guru Chandal Yoga?

Jupiter and Rahu share a sign in about one chart in twelve. Because both move slowly, it occurs in runs of several months; for example, both were in sidereal Aries for much of 2023, from about late April to late October.

Examples

Jupiter and Rahu together in Aries, as for many people born between late April and late October 2023. Jupiter and Rahu together in Pisces, Jupiter's own sign, is a form in which most teachers expect Jupiter's dignity to steady the combination.

When Guru Chandal Yoga gives results

It is said to be most active in the Rahu mahadasha with Jupiter antardasha and the Jupiter mahadasha with Rahu antardasha, and during the main periods of either planet.

A yoga is read together with the whole chart: the dignity of the planets, the houses they rule for your Lagna, and the dasha running. Houses here are whole-sign houses counted from the Lagna, as in the Navagraha app. Make your free Kundli to see where these planets sit in your own chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is Guru Chandal Yoga?

It is the conjunction of Jupiter and Rahu in the same sign. Tradition links it with questioning inherited beliefs and with cautions around judgement and advisers, but also with original thinking and reform.

Is Guru Chandal Yoga always bad?

No. Its effect depends on Jupiter's dignity, the house involved and the dashas. A dignified Jupiter is said to guide Rahu's ambition, and many people with this conjunction are innovators, researchers or reformers.

Does Jupiter with Ketu also count as Guru Chandal Yoga?

Some teachers include Jupiter with Ketu, while others limit the name to Jupiter with Rahu. The Jupiter-Ketu combination is usually read differently, with themes of detachment and spiritual inquiry.
