How Vish Yoga forms
The Moon and Saturn together in the same sign. Some teachers extend it to their mutual aspect, to Saturn's 3rd or 10th aspect on the Moon, or to an exchange of nakshatras, with the Moon in a Saturn-ruled nakshatra (Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada) and Saturn in a Moon-ruled one (Rohini, Hasta, Shravana). A conjunction within a few degrees is considered stronger. Vish means poison, a dramatic name for what is essentially the meeting of the mind (Moon) with restriction (Saturn); it is a popular later label rather than a named yoga in the best-known classical texts.
Effects of Vish Yoga
The Moon represents the mind and feelings and Saturn represents duty, time and limitation, so their meeting is traditionally read as feelings held back by responsibility. Typical descriptions are a serious or reserved temperament, a tendency to worry, emotional fulfilment that arrives late, and a dutiful or strained bond with the mother.
The same pairing gives emotional maturity, patience, endurance and the ability to keep working steadily under pressure, and many people with it are notably dependable. Its strength depends on the Moon's brightness, Saturn's dignity and support from Jupiter. This is a traditional reading only and not medical advice; persistent low mood is worth discussing with a qualified professional.
What strengthens or softens it
- A bright, strong Moon reduces the heaviness of the combination.
- Saturn in Libra, Capricorn or Aquarius gives a more disciplined, constructive form.
- Jupiter's aspect on the pair softens it.
- A close conjunction and a waning Moon in a dusthana is the form tradition takes most seriously.
- Its themes tend to surface in the Saturn-Moon and Moon-Saturn periods and during Sade Sati.
How common is Vish Yoga?
The Moon joins Saturn by sign in about one chart in twelve. Looser forms counting aspects or nakshatra exchange are more frequent.
Examples
The Moon and Saturn together in Libra, with Saturn exalted, in the 10th house is a disciplined, career-focused form. The Moon and Saturn together in Aries, with Saturn debilitated, close by degree and with a waning Moon in the 8th house, is the form tradition treats with most care.
When Vish Yoga gives results
Its themes are said to come forward in the Saturn mahadasha with Moon antardasha, the Moon mahadasha with Saturn antardasha, and during Saturn's Sade Sati transit over the natal Moon.
A yoga is read together with the whole chart: the dignity of the planets, the houses they rule for your Lagna, and the dasha running. Houses here are whole-sign houses counted from the Lagna, as in the Navagraha app. Make your free Kundli to see where these planets sit in your own chart.
