Adhi Yoga
Chandra yoga (read from the Moon)
Updated
Adhi Yoga forms when the benefics Mercury, Jupiter and Venus occupy the 6th, 7th and 8th houses from the Moon. Tradition links it with positions of trust and leadership, comfort and good health, graded by how many benefics take part and how strong they are.

How Adhi Yoga forms
The natural benefics Mercury, Jupiter and Venus placed in the 6th, 7th and 8th houses counted from the Moon. This is the usual form, sometimes called Chandra Adhi Yoga; a parallel version counted from the Lagna is called Lagna Adhi Yoga. Texts and teachers differ on how many of the three houses must be occupied: the fullest form has benefics in all three, while many accept benefics in two of them, or even one, as weaker grades. Most also ask for the benefics to be strong and free of malefic association, and some say that a debilitated or combust benefic does not count.
Effects of Adhi Yoga
Classical texts grade the results by strength. A full, strong Adhi Yoga is described in the old language of royal courts as making a person a leader, minister or commander, while the weaker grades give a respected, comfortable and secure life. The benefics placed opposite the Moon are said to protect the mind, giving a calm, trusted and courteous person who overcomes opposition without much strain.
There is an astronomical point behind the yoga. Mercury and Venus always stay close to the Sun, so when either is in the 6th to 8th from the Moon, the Moon is usually well away from the Sun in the sky, which tends to mean a fairly bright, past-quarter Moon. Part of the yoga's reputation may therefore come from a strong Moon. Modern astrologers read it as a marker of dignity and support, with the scale of the result set by the rest of the chart.
What strengthens it
- All three houses (6th, 7th and 8th from the Moon) occupied by benefics, rather than one or two.
- The benefics in their own, exalted or friendly signs, and Mercury and Venus not combust.
- No malefic joining the benefics in those houses.
- A bright, strong Moon, which often accompanies the yoga.
- Activation in the dashas of Jupiter, Venus or Mercury, and of the Moon.
How common is Adhi Yoga?
The full form, with benefics in all three houses, is uncommon. Looser forms with one or two benefics in the 6th to 8th from the Moon are frequent, which is why the grade of the yoga matters more than its name.
Examples
The Moon in Aries with Mercury in Virgo (the 6th from the Moon), Venus in Libra (the 7th) and Jupiter in Scorpio (the 8th) is a full Adhi Yoga. The Moon in Taurus with Jupiter in Scorpio (the 7th) and Venus in Sagittarius (the 8th) is a two-planet form.
When Adhi Yoga gives results
Results tend to show in the dashas of the benefics forming the yoga, especially Jupiter, and in the Moon's dasha. The house of the benefics from the Lagna suggests where the support is felt.
A yoga is read together with the whole chart: the dignity of the planets, the houses they rule for your Lagna, and the dasha running. Houses here are whole-sign houses counted from the Lagna, as in the Navagraha app. Make your free Kundli to see where these planets sit in your own chart.
Frequently asked questions
What is Adhi Yoga?
It forms when the benefics Mercury, Jupiter and Venus occupy the 6th, 7th and 8th houses from the Moon. Tradition links it with leadership, trust, comfort and good health, graded by how many benefics take part and how strong they are.
Do all three houses need to be occupied for Adhi Yoga?
The fullest form has benefics in all three houses. Many teachers accept benefics in two of them, or even one, as weaker grades. Texts differ, so it helps to state which version is being used.
What is Lagna Adhi Yoga?
It is the same pattern counted from the Lagna instead of the Moon: benefics in the 6th, 7th and 8th houses from the ascendant. It is read in a similar way and is considered a separate, parallel form.
