Mahabhagya Yoga
Raja yoga (status and authority)
Updated
Mahabhagya Yoga, "great fortune", forms for a man born by day with the Lagna, Sun and Moon in odd signs, or a woman born by night with all three in even signs. Tradition links it with good fortune, generosity and a respected standing, depending on the strength of the Sun, Moon and Lagna lord.

How Mahabhagya Yoga forms
The classical rule is written separately for men and women. For a man: birth during the day, with the Lagna, the Sun and the Moon all in odd signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius). For a woman: birth at night, with the Lagna, the Sun and the Moon all in even signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces). Day birth means the Sun was above the horizon at birth, which in a whole-sign chart usually puts it in the 7th to 12th houses; night birth puts it in the 1st to 6th. The idea behind the rule is that every basic factor of the chart shares the same polarity, since odd signs and the day are counted as masculine and even signs and the night as feminine. Modern astrologers differ on whether to apply the rule strictly by sex or to read it as a harmony of the chart's polarities.
Effects of Mahabhagya Yoga
Classical texts describe a fortunate, generous and well-known person who enjoys a long and comfortable life and is respected by those in authority. Because the Lagna (the body and self), the Sun (the soul and authority) and the Moon (the mind) all agree in nature, the yoga is read as a chart whose basic energies pull in the same direction, which makes it easier for the person to act with confidence and consistency.
It is still a broad, structural yoga rather than a specific promise. The quality of the result depends on the dignity of the Sun and Moon, the strength of the Lagna lord and the rest of the chart. A Mahabhagya chart with a weak Lagna lord or an afflicted Moon gives a modest version, while one with a strong Sun and a bright Moon in good houses gives a more visible one.
What strengthens it
- The Sun and the Moon in their own, exalted or friendly signs, and not afflicted by Saturn, Rahu or Ketu.
- A strong Lagna lord placed in a kendra or trikona.
- A bright Moon, near full, rather than a dim one close to the new Moon.
- Benefic aspects on the Lagna, the Sun or the Moon, especially from Jupiter.
- Activation in the dashas of the Sun, the Moon or the Lagna lord.
How common is Mahabhagya Yoga?
On simple counting, about one chart in sixteen meets the rule for the person's sex, since three factors must fall in the right type of sign and the birth must be at the right time of day. It is notable but not rare.
Examples
A man born in the middle of the morning with a Gemini Lagna, the Sun in Aries in the 11th house (above the horizon, so a day birth) and the Moon in Libra. A woman born at night with a Scorpio Lagna, the Sun in Pisces in the 5th house (below the horizon) and the Moon in Taurus.
When Mahabhagya Yoga gives results
Its results are said to show most clearly in the dashas of the Sun, the Moon and the Lagna lord, and in periods when transiting Jupiter supports the Lagna or the Moon.
A yoga is read together with the whole chart: the dignity of the planets, the houses they rule for your Lagna, and the dasha running. Houses here are whole-sign houses counted from the Lagna, as in the Navagraha app. Make your free Kundli to see where these planets sit in your own chart.
Frequently asked questions
What is Mahabhagya Yoga?
It is a yoga of "great fortune". For a man it needs a day birth with the Lagna, Sun and Moon in odd signs; for a woman, a night birth with all three in even signs. Tradition links it with good fortune, generosity and respect, in proportion to the strength of the planets involved.
Why is Mahabhagya Yoga different for men and women?
Classical texts pair odd signs and the day with masculine qualities, and even signs and the night with feminine ones, and wrote the rule accordingly. Some modern astrologers keep the rule as written, while others read it more generally as a chart whose basic factors share one polarity.
Does Mahabhagya Yoga guarantee success?
No. It describes a chart whose foundations agree, which tradition sees as fortunate, but outcomes depend on the strength of the Sun, the Moon and the Lagna lord, on the other yogas present and on the dashas. Treat it as a supportive factor, not a promise.
