Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga

Raja yoga (status and authority)

Updated

Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga links the lords of the 9th and 10th houses. Tradition connects it with a career guided by principle, good fortune in action, and rising status when the planets are strong and their dashas operate.

How Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga forms

A link between the lord of the 9th house (dharma, fortune, merit) and the lord of the 10th house (karma, action, career). They may be conjunct in the same sign, in mutual aspect, or in exchange of signs. It is regarded as one of the most important forms of Raja Yoga because the 9th and 10th are respectively the strongest trikona and the strongest kendra. Texts give a graded reading: conjunction in a kendra or trikona is strongest, and aspects or exchanges are somewhat less direct. Some teachers also count the signs of the 9th and 10th lords being in each other's houses as a weaker form.

Effects of Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga

The 9th house represents fortune, ethics, teachers and merit, and the 10th represents career, duty and public standing. When their lords join, a person's work and sense of right livelihood are said to support each other. Classical texts describe respected positions, honour earned through conduct, and good outcomes from effort, often in fields connected with law, administration, teaching, government or leadership.

The result depends on which houses the yoga occupies and on the planets involved. In the 1st, 4th, 7th, 9th or 10th it is said to give a clear, public result; in the 6th, 8th or 12th it works more quietly or with obstacles. The nature of the planets also colours the result: a Sun-Jupiter link looks very different from a Saturn-Venus link, and for some Lagnas the lords involved are themselves difficult.

What strengthens it

How common is Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga?

The two lords are linked by conjunction, aspect or exchange in only a portion of charts, roughly one in five on simple counting, so it is notable but not rare.

Examples

For a Cancer Lagna, Jupiter (9th lord) and Mars (10th lord) together in the 10th or 5th house. For an Aries Lagna, Jupiter (9th lord) and Saturn (10th lord) in mutual aspect, though that pairing is mixed in nature.

When Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga gives results

The results usually show in the mahadasha or antardasha of the 9th lord or 10th lord, and the combination of their periods often marks significant career progress.

A yoga is read together with the whole chart: the dignity of the planets, the houses they rule for your Lagna, and the dasha running. Houses here are whole-sign houses counted from the Lagna, as in the Navagraha app. Make your free Kundli to see where these planets sit in your own chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga?

It is a link between the lords of the 9th and 10th houses, through conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange of signs. Tradition treats it as a strong Raja Yoga associated with principled work, good fortune and rising status.

Is Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga good for career?

Yes, it is considered one of the better indications for career and status, provided the two lords are well placed and strong. The result is activated in their dashas, and the rest of the chart can enhance or reduce its effect.

What if one planet rules both the 9th and 10th houses?

This happens, for example, with Saturn for a Taurus Lagna, since Saturn rules Capricorn (9th) and Aquarius (10th). It is considered a strong form because the one planet carries both houses, so its dignity, placement and dasha largely decide the outcome.
