Viparita Raja Yoga

Raja yoga (status and authority)

Updated

Viparita Raja Yoga forms when a dusthana lord sits in another dusthana. Tradition says it can turn setbacks into gains, with success that comes after difficulty, though texts disagree on how strictly to apply it.

How Viparita Raja Yoga forms

The lord of a dusthana (6th, 8th or 12th house) placed in another dusthana. Three named forms are commonly given. Harsha: the 6th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th. Sarala: the 8th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th. Vimala: the 12th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th. The idea is that the difficulties these houses represent are destroyed by their own lords' fall. Texts disagree on details: some require the dusthana lord to be unconnected with benefics or with lords of other houses, and some say the yoga fails if the lord is conjunct a kendra or trikona lord. A strict reading is therefore narrower than a loose one.

Effects of Viparita Raja Yoga

The word viparita means reversed. The 6th, 8th and 12th houses are houses of struggle, loss and endings, and when their lords are placed in these houses they are said to destroy each other's harm. Classical readings describe unexpected gains after hardship: recovery from illness or debt, victory over opponents, inheritance, insurance or hidden resources, and success abroad. Harsha is linked with health and victory over rivals, Sarala with endurance and long life after crises, and Vimala with frugality and a good name.

The result is rarely immediate. It tends to come after a phase of trouble, and it is more convincing when the dusthana lords are not also heavily afflicted. Some modern teachers are sceptical and treat the effect as modest; others see it as a strong marker of resilience. It also depends on the lordship of those planets for the particular Lagna.

What strengthens it

How common is Viparita Raja Yoga?

A dusthana lord lands in a dusthana quite often, so some version of the yoga appears in a sizeable share of charts. A clean, strict form is less common.

Examples

A Gemini Lagna with the 6th lord Mars in Taurus, the 12th house (Harsha). A Sagittarius Lagna with the Moon, which rules only the 8th house for that Lagna, placed in Taurus in the 6th (Sarala); the Moon is also exalted there, which many teachers see as helping the reversal.

When Viparita Raja Yoga gives results

Results appear in the dasha of the dusthana lord, and especially in its antardashas of other dusthana lords. They commonly follow a period of difficulty.

A yoga is read together with the whole chart: the dignity of the planets, the houses they rule for your Lagna, and the dasha running. Houses here are whole-sign houses counted from the Lagna, as in the Navagraha app. Make your free Kundli to see where these planets sit in your own chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is Viparita Raja Yoga?

It is a yoga formed when a lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th house is placed in another of those houses. Tradition says the troubles of those houses cancel one another and may produce success after hardship.

What are Harsha, Sarala and Vimala yogas?

They are the three forms of Viparita Raja Yoga. Harsha involves the 6th lord, Sarala the 8th lord and Vimala the 12th lord, each placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th. Each is linked to a different type of resilience.

Does Viparita Raja Yoga mean sudden luck?

Not necessarily. Tradition describes gains that follow difficulty, often over a long period and not instantly. How strongly it works depends on the strength of the planets, the Lagna and the dashas.
