Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga
Raja yoga (status and authority)
Updated
Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga occurs when the usual weakness of a debilitated planet is cancelled by specific conditions, often by a strong dispositor in a kendra. Tradition says it can convert early difficulty into later success, though the exact rules vary between texts.

How Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga forms
The cancellation (bhanga) of a planet's debilitation (neecha), which can turn the weakness into strength. Debilitation signs are the Sun in Libra, the Moon in Scorpio, Mars in Cancer, Mercury in Pisces, Jupiter in Capricorn, Venus in Virgo and Saturn in Aries. The commonly quoted conditions include: the lord of the sign of debilitation stands in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon; the planet that would be exalted in that sign is in a kendra from the Lagna or Moon; the debilitated planet is aspected by or conjoined with its dispositor; or two debilitated planets aspect one another. Texts list different rules and different numbers of them, and teachers disagree about how many conditions must be met and whether the cancellation is full or partial.
Effects of Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga
A debilitated planet normally struggles to deliver its themes, and its house can feel under-supported. When the debilitation is cancelled, classical texts describe a reversal: the person starts with obstacles in the areas that planet governs, then slowly gains strength and may rise to a position of influence. Because the planet had to be built up from a low base, the result is often described as hard-earned and durable.
Interpretations vary widely. Some astrologers treat the cancellation as partial, so the planet gets better but is not fully strong. Others say the planet becomes a Raja Yoga giver, particularly if the cancelling planet is a kendra or trikona lord. The sign, the house the planet occupies and the strength of the cancelling planet decide which description fits. In the Navamsa chart, a debilitated planet that is also strong there is considered another form of cancellation.
What strengthens it
- The dispositor (lord of the debilitation sign) is strong and in a kendra from the Lagna or Moon.
- More than one cancellation condition is met at the same time.
- The debilitated planet is not combust and is not conjoined with tight malefics.
- The planet also gains dignity in the Navamsa, for example by being exalted or in its own sign there.
- Activation through the dasha of the debilitated planet or of the cancelling planet, often after a delay.
How common is Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga?
Debilitated planets are common, and at least one cancellation rule is met in many of them, so the yoga is more common than its grand name implies. A fully convincing form, with several conditions met, is much rarer.
Examples
Sun in Libra with Venus (lord of Libra) in a kendra from the Lagna or Moon. Another example is Jupiter in Capricorn with Saturn (Capricorn's lord) in a kendra, or with Mars (the planet exalted in Capricorn) in a kendra from the Lagna.
When Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga gives results
Results tend to show in the dasha of the debilitated planet, especially in its later phases, and in the dasha of the cancelling planet. Many accounts describe the improvement as arriving after an early struggle.
A yoga is read together with the whole chart: the dignity of the planets, the houses they rule for your Lagna, and the dasha running. Houses here are whole-sign houses counted from the Lagna, as in the Navagraha app. Make your free Kundli to see where these planets sit in your own chart.
Frequently asked questions
What is Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga?
It is the cancellation of a planet's debilitation by specific conditions, such as its dispositor standing in a kendra. Tradition says this can transform weakness into strength, giving success after early difficulty, although the rules differ between texts.
Is a debilitated planet always bad?
No. A debilitated planet can be weak in its basic themes, but cancellation rules, house placement, aspects and Navamsa strength all modify the picture. Some debilitated planets perform surprisingly well when supported, which is why the whole chart matters.
How do I know if my debilitation is cancelled?
Check whether the dispositor of the debilitated planet, or the planet that would be exalted in that sign, sits in a kendra from the Lagna or Moon, or whether the dispositor aspects the planet. An astrologer can also check the Navamsa and the dashas.
