Which day is Chhath Puja in 2026?
Chhath is kept on Kartik Shukla Shashthi, the sixth day of the bright fortnight, about a week after Diwali. The main day is the one on which Shashthi is running at sunset, since the evening offering is made then. In New Delhi Shashthi runs 14 Nov 11:24 PM – 16 Nov 2:02 AM, so it covers the sunset of 15 November (5:28 PM) and the main day is Sunday, 15 November 2026. The next sunrise, 6:44 AM on 16 November, is the Usha Arghya; Saptami begins in the early hours (16 Nov 2:02 AM – 17 Nov 4:20 AM). Nahay Khay and Kharna fall on the two days before the main day.
About Chhath
- Who is worshipped: Surya (the Sun god) and Chhathi Maiya, observed above all in Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and the Nepal Terai, and by families from there around the world.
- Arghya: water, milk or offerings are offered to the Sun while standing in water, with a bamboo soop (winnowing tray) holding fruit, thekua and sugarcane. Families usually reach the ghat well before sunset or sunrise, so treat the times above as the moment of the offering itself.
- Looking after yourself: the long fast is demanding. If you have a health condition, or are elderly, pregnant or on medication, follow your family's guidance and your doctor's advice.
How the times are calculated
Sunrise and sunset come from the Sun's position for each city's latitude and longitude, and the Shashthi and Saptami tithi boundaries from the Sun's and Moon's longitudes (sidereal zodiac, Lahiri ayanamsa). Nothing is copied from another almanac. How we calculate.
Times are calculated for each city's coordinates (sunrise and sunset by the upper limb, standard refraction; tithis from the Sun's and Moon's longitudes, sidereal zodiac, Lahiri ayanamsa). Hills, buildings, haze or cloud can move the moment you see the Sun by several minutes, and regional traditions differ, so your family's custom, priest or local panchang comes first. This is traditional information, not advice.
