Mercury Retrograde 2026
24 October, 12:46 PM IST to 13 November, 9:23 PM IST
Updated
Mercury is retrograde from 24 October, 12:46 PM IST until 13 November, 9:23 PM IST (about 20 days), moving backward through sidereal Libra (Tula). That includes Dhanteras (6 November), Diwali (8 November) and Bhai Dooj.
What "retrograde" means
Mercury does not turn around. Seen from Earth, a faster inner planet periodically appears to slow, stop and drift backward against the stars, because Earth overtakes it on its orbit. This happens about three times a year for Mercury. The two turning points (the stations) in 2026 are computed here from the planet's longitude: Mercury stations retrograde on 24 October, 12:46 PM IST and direct on 13 November, 9:23 PM IST.
The Vedic view
In Jyotish Mercury (Budha) governs speech, trade, writing, contracts, short travel and the analytical mind. A retrograde (vakri) Mercury is traditionally read as a time when these themes turn inward: review, revise and reconnect rather than rush into something new. It is a prompt for care, not a prohibition, and the effect depends on your own chart: the houses Mercury rules, where it sits, and your running dasha.
Practical, not frightening
- Double-check dates, addresses, amounts and attachments before sending or signing.
- Keep important purchases to what you need, and keep the receipt and warranty.
- Old contacts and unfinished tasks often resurface: a good time to finish rather than start.
- Festival worship, family gatherings and Diwali puja go on as usual: the retrograde does not change any tithi or muhurat.
What it means for your sign
Mercury is in sidereal Libra at the start and Libra at the end, so people with a Libra Moon feel it most directly in the sign itself. For every Moon sign, see Diwali 2026 for your rashi, which places Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn and Venus against your sign on Diwali night.
Dates are computed from the planet's position (sidereal zodiac, Lahiri ayanamsa). Traditional astrology describes tendencies and guarantees nothing.
